Computer Class Summary 2007-2008

 
Computers Science I (Introduction to Computers)  
high school  [32 weeks of instruction]
  Students develop practical skills related to computers and office applications. A considerable portion of the course involves intermediate level use and integrating content between word processors, spreadsheets and presentation software. Additional course topics include discussion of ethical computer use, web design basics, and a comprehensive view of the Internet’s background and uses.

Computer Science II  
high school  [32 weeks]
  Designed to challenge high school students who already have computer skills, this course provides topics on computer programming, advanced application use, computer networking and advanced computer topics.
       
 

[pre-requisites: Introduction to Computers or qualifying assessment exam.]

 

Computer Foundations  
middle school  [32 weeks]
  Students acquire beginning computer literacy and usage skills, including an understanding of computer hardware, software and operating system basics. At a foundational level, the course will introduce students to word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software, requiring them to demonstrate skills through hands-on  projects. Additional course topics include Internet, web searching, e-mail usage, computer history and ethical use of technology.

Practical Computers  
middle school  [16 weeks]
  This course is design for novice computer users to provide them a practical introduction to computers, the Internet, word processing and presentation software. Students apply skills through practical projects related to real-life situations.

Survey of Computer Basics (Part I)   
middle school   [10 weeks]
                                                                                                
A series of classes on the basics of using a computer, this course introduces how to run applications, organize and save document files, access the Internet for e-mail, research, and fun uses of computers. It is a survey class intended to orientate early computer users.

Computer Science – AP College Board Preparation  
high school  [32 weeks]
 

Advance Placement exams are offered through AP College Boards, an independent organization. Students scoring well on an exam(s) may be awarded college level credit along with contributing toward preferred consideration of college acceptance. Please visit the AP College Board web site for complete information on participating in the AP program.

Following the skills listed on the AP College Board web site, this course introduces students to college level computer science concepts in programming using JAVA as a programming language. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in developing algorithms and data structures, code object-oriented programs in JAVA based on structured logic and utilize problem solving skills in the development and debugging of their programs.
