Lesson 5 - Essential Computer Skills

Homework for week 2
By Wednesday –

  • Read lesson 5, completing all the “Step-by-Step” exercises, except 5.7 on installing new software. You are welcome to team up with someone in your family who cares for the computer(s) in your house to assist next time software is installed. Study the vocabulary terms.

By Thursday –

  • Make a copy of the Review Questions rather than writing in your book. Answer them 1st without the book. Next use the book to check your answers. If you get an answer incorrect, mark it with an ‘X’ and then circle the correct answer. The number of wrong answers will not be kept track of. Have one of your parents initial it and then place it in a three-ring binder that you will use throughout the course.

By Friday –

  • Complete Activity 5-1. Use Word Pad and make two lists: one for similarities and one for differences.
  • Assignments and exercises should be printed, include student’s full name, be initialed by a parent and brought to class in your notebook.
  • Memorize the definitions for vocabulary terms for chapter 5.

Review Chaper 14 - word working with tables

Team up with another student in class and complete "Team Project" on page 290

Complete Activity 14-1 on page 290

Recreate the Word document handed out in class. Make the following changes to your document:

  1. Place column headings on top of the table describing the three packets. It should read "Item" and "Description".
  2. Set the font in the headings to bold 18 point .
  3. Shade the Cells a light-green.
  4. Place a 3 point border around the header cells.
  5. Center the lines "Evaluation Report" & "Prepared for Top Flight Travel" and place a 3-D styled box around the two paragraphs.

26. Researching on the Internet & Word

Create a Word document that demonstrates the following features. Next week in class you will be asked to present your document and explain how you formatted it, representing all the requirements.

  1. Paragraph alignment - align some text in an alignment other than left.
  2. Tab settings - demonstrate the use of three or more tabs, one utilizing a leader.
  3. Table: Include a table within your document that has at least three columns and four rows.
  4. Inclusion of Word Art.
  5. Use of a drop cap.
  6. Use of two or more section breaks along with a section of multiple columns.
  7. Inclusion of a border around one or more paragraphs.
  8. Inclusion of clip art or the insertion of a picture.

After clicking the link, a new page will open displaying the web page. Allow the page to load and run the JavaScript. Next, from the View menu, choose source and the HTML code should open with Notepad.
